GSAT-5p Satellite launch fails | Explodes In Mid Air Exclusive Photos And Videos
ISRO's space programme suffered a major setback on Saturday as the launch of advanced communication satellite GSAT-5P failed due to major technical fault in the first phase.
The rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) exploded mid-air moments after it took off from the Sriharikota rocket launch centre.
The satellite GSAT-5P was expected to serve the needs of the telecommunication sector and the weather department and would have eventually replaced the INSAT-2E satellite that was sent up in 1999.
It weighed 2,130 kg and the cost of its production was around Rs 125 crore.
The GSAT-5P satellite had a life span of over 13 years and had 36 transponders - automatic receivers and transmitters for communication and broadcast of signals

Nalini Jaywant, well-known actress of yesteryears who mesmerised cinegoers with her tantalising portrayal in "Munimjee", co-starring Dev Anand, died at the age of 84 at her home earlier this week in Chembur in north-east Mumbai. 
According to film industry sources, the actress had turned into a complete recluse for the last few years after the death of her husband, actor Prabhu Dayal. She died on Tuesday of a heart attack, a distant relative of hers said.
Neighbours said her servant informed her distant relative, who was seen placing the body in an ambulance for the last rites. A stunned Dev Anand, who acted with her in a couple of films, including "Kala Pani", said he was shocked to hear about her death.
She made her debut in films with "Radhika", released in 1941, and went on to feature with big names like Dilip Kumar and Nargis in "Anokha Pyar", a love triangle. She starred opposite Ashok Kumar in "Samadhi", "Sangram", "Mr X" and "Kafila" and opposite Kishore Kumar in "Muqqadar".
Her other notable films were "Behan", "Jalpari", "Shikast", "Jaadu", "Mehbooba", "Raj Kanya", "Railway Platform", "Saloni" and "Bombay Race Course".
Jaywant won the Filmfare best supporting actress award for her portrayal in the 1958 film "Kala Pani". Her last released movie was 1983's "Nastik", in which she made a comeback to films.
A Filmfare poll in the 1950s had named her the most beautiful woman in the Hindi film world.

A.R. Rahman. The double Oscar winning Indian composer has bagged a Golden Globe nomination for Danny Boyle's '127 Hours', having already won the trophy once for the director's mega sweep 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009.
This is the 44-year-old's second flick at Hollywood's second most prestigious annual movie prize after Boyle's Mumbai-based multiple-Oscar award wining underdog drama 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Rahman won two Oscars and a Golden Globe for his number 'Jai ho' in the movie.
The Chennai-based composer is competing in the same section as before - Original Score for a motion picture category - with the likes of Alexandre Desplat ('The King's Speech'), Danny Elfman ('Alice in Wonderland'), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross ('The Social Network'), and Hans Zimmer ('Inception').
Bollywood was on cloud nine with its leading musician's feat.

The soundtrack of '127 Hours' includes the popular song 'If I Rise', a collaboration between Rahman and pop star Dido.
Starring 'Spider-Man' star James Franco, the movie is a biopic about mountaineer Aron Ralston, who was trapped in a canyon in Utah for five days by a boulder that fell on his right arm and he freed himself by amputating the limb.
Ralston recently even complimented the composer on his music in the film by sending him a hand-written note.
It read: 'For A.R, Thank you for bringing your amazing music to my story - if only I had your soundtrack in the canyon, I could've lasted another 127 hours. Best Wishes, A.R. (Aron Ralston).'
Fondly called the Mozart of Madras, Rahman was honoured with a Padma Bhushan this year.
The shy musician also has two gramophones on his shelf that he won at the 52nd Grammy Awards for his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
The only defeat he had had was at this year's Oscars ceremony when his number 'Na Na' from his Hollywood debut venture 'Couple's Retreat' failed to win a nomination in the Best Original Song category at the gala.

With a user base of 100 million, the country now stands third in the world in terms of the number of people surfing the net, an official of internet search engine Google said in Kolkata on Tuesday. "China has the highest number of internet users at 300 million followed by the US with 207 million.
India comes third with the number of internet users now soaring to 100 million," Vinay goel, head of products, Google India, told mediapersons.
Of the internet users in the country, 40 million access the net through mobile phones.
"Our estimate is that by 2012, the number of mobile internet users will surpass those entering the net via their laptops or desktops. The number of mobile internet surfers in India is growing rapidly. In 2007, the country had only two million such users. Now the number has gone up 20 times," Goel said.
However, he pointed out that there was a massive scope of increasing the user base in the mobile internet space as the figure of 40 million comprises only eight percent of those carrying mobile phones.
Goel said that most of the internet users in the country search for songs.

Who Invented Final Exams?
Whoever it was that invented final exams, should be hurt. It is one of the dumbest ideas. Obviously you either learned the material or you didn’t, and that is judged when you take the regular tests. I am not looking forward to next week at all. Thankfully I don’t have a final in every class, but I definitely have enough to be more than satisfied. I have never really known how to study, and studying for something like finals is toture to me. Even the thought of next week makes me cringe. I don’t want to take my finals! Especially for chemistry, my hardest class. I don’t even know where to begin studying for chemistry. I haven’t understood anything since the beginning of the semester, so I don’t see the point in studying so hard, if I don’t understand any of the material anyway. I think it’s stupid that finals could have such a great effect on your grade. It is ridiculous that you could have a good grade going into the final, and then you take one test and it could change your grade completely. If you are on the borderline of getting the next higher grade, and then you take the test and don’t do so great and there goes your good grade. I have always felt like teachers enjoy giving final exams and making them hard just to watch students suffer. I have never been a good test taker either and final exams are usually multiple choice tests, that makes it even harder. All I can say is that when next Thursday rolls around, and I am done with my finals, I am going to be so happy!

Indo-France nuclear co-operation signed | India-France Nuclear
French President Nicolas Sarkozy's landmark India visit has led to the signing of landmark nuclear deals. Construction of French nuclear reactors in India is in the pipeline. Other bilateral cooperation in the atomic energy sector is also under consideration.
Sarkozy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a high-profile meeting today. "President Sarkozy's visit is fourth in a series of high-level exchanges between India and France in the last three years. This reflects importance of the strategic partnership. Discussions were wide ranging and extremely productive. We made significant progress on all issues. On nuclear energy, the negotiations have paved the way for nuclear reactors at Jaitapur."
"Several other agreements in nuclear areas such as research and training, nuclear safety, waste management have also been concluded," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said while addressing a press conference after the talks.
"France is our one of the most reliable defence partners. Counter terror is significant area of cooperation where we are making good progress; science and technology are emerging as new sources of growth which will drive relationship forward," he added.
Speaking to media persons, Sarkozy said, "We have not come simply to visit a major client, but a partner. The signing of the two EPRs (reactors) is just the beginning." France also expressed solidarity in India's bid for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
Agreement has been made between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and French company Areva to establish nuclear power plant (NPP) units in Jaitapur in Maharashtra. An agreement on 'Protection of Confidentiality of Technical Data and Information Relating to Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy' was also signed.
The atomic energy sector got a much needed boost when the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and France's atomic energy commission the Commissariat A L'energie Atomique Et Aux Energies Alternatives(CEA) was signed for engagement in the field of nuclear science and technology.

Sarkozy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a high-profile meeting today. "President Sarkozy's visit is fourth in a series of high-level exchanges between India and France in the last three years. This reflects importance of the strategic partnership. Discussions were wide ranging and extremely productive. We made significant progress on all issues. On nuclear energy, the negotiations have paved the way for nuclear reactors at Jaitapur."
"Several other agreements in nuclear areas such as research and training, nuclear safety, waste management have also been concluded," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said while addressing a press conference after the talks.
"France is our one of the most reliable defence partners. Counter terror is significant area of cooperation where we are making good progress; science and technology are emerging as new sources of growth which will drive relationship forward," he added.
Speaking to media persons, Sarkozy said, "We have not come simply to visit a major client, but a partner. The signing of the two EPRs (reactors) is just the beginning." France also expressed solidarity in India's bid for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
Agreement has been made between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and French company Areva to establish nuclear power plant (NPP) units in Jaitapur in Maharashtra. An agreement on 'Protection of Confidentiality of Technical Data and Information Relating to Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy' was also signed.
The atomic energy sector got a much needed boost when the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and France's atomic energy commission the Commissariat A L'energie Atomique Et Aux Energies Alternatives(CEA) was signed for engagement in the field of nuclear science and technology.

Facebook cartoon character campaign
A Facebook campaign which purports to fight child abuse by asking users to change their profile picture to that of their favourite cartoon character has run into controversy.
The campaign, which urges the image swap, has swept the social networking site and boasts a group page of nearly 90,000 fans. While many believe the viral originated from the children's charity the NSPCC, it has denied any involvement, although welcomes the focus on the work it does.
However, disturbingly, rumours are now sweeping the net that the campaign is actually a smokescreen for paedophiles hoping to narrow down which users are children.

The Facebook message reads: ‘Change your FB picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal is not to see a human face on FB until Monday (Dec 6th) Join the fight against child abuse & copy and paste to your status!
No one has come forward to claim responsibility for the campaign. The NSPCC posted the following statement on its Twitter page: ‘Although the NSPCC did not originate the childhood cartoon Facebook campaign, we welcome the attention it has brought to the work we do.’

The weather department said that the rain will continue on Monday, Dec 6 as a fresh low pressure trough has formed in Bay of Bengal.
Government officials said that schools and educational institutions in Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Trichy and in some other affected areas will remain closed on Monday.Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as heavy rain expected in coming hours. The death toll is expected to increase. Most of the death were due to electrocution, wall collapses, lightning and drowning in flood waters

Toll touches 100 in TN rain ravage
The monsoon toll in Tamil Nadu touched 100 with two more people, a nine-year-old girl in Thanjavur and a college student in Madurai district, dying in rain-related incidents on Wednesday even as incessant showers continued to disrupt normal life across the state.
The police said Suruthika, of Kanthavanam near Melattur, was sleeping in her home early on Wednesday when a portion of the wall collapsed in heavy rain, crushing her to death. Her mother Sundari, 30, and brother Surya, 8, who were also injured in the mishap are undergoing treatment at Thanjavur Government Hospital.
In another rain-related death, floodwaters washed away 20-year-old Kalyanasundaram J., of Sakkimangalam in Madurai district, when he was bathing with his friends in the Vaigai river on Tuesday. Fire service personnel retrieved his body on Wednesday after an intense search.
In Kanyakumari several children escaped injury or death when a government primary school in Kanyakumari collapsed Wednesday morning. Earlier, torrential rain claimed the lives of two women in Palani Tuesday night.
The police said Mahamayee and her daughter-in-law Mallika were killed when the mud wall of their house collapsed. Their bodies were recovered from the debris. Mallika’s daughter Abinaya, 2, sustained grievous injuries and has been admitted to Madurai Rajaji Hospital. Her condition is said to be critical.
Weathermen in Chennai predicted that heavy rainfall could continue up to the end of the month. “While the southern districts have received the most rainfall over the past few days, our models indicate that precipitation may spread to northern parts of the state over the coming days,” said Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general, Regional Meteorological Centre. “As the low pressure trough over the state remains potent, we can expect good rainfall for the six or seven days.”Met department officials pointed out that the northeast monsoon has now become fully active over Tamil Nadu and rainfall this year could be bountiful as it has been over the past few years.
