18 Indian accounts in Liechtenstein bank List ,Exposed By Tehelka Magazine

Almost two years since the German government handed over a list of 18 Indian nationals who have accounts in the LGT bank of Liechtenstein, a tax haven; Tehelka, a weekly magazine has published 18 names.

Mint could not independently verify this.

The names disclosed by the magazine are Manoj Dhupelia, Rupal Dhupelia, Mohan Dhupelia, Hasmukh Gandhi, Chintan Gandhi, Dilip Mehta, Arun Mehta, Arun Kochar, Gunwanti Mehta, Rajnikant Mehta, Prabodh Mehta, Ashok Jaipuria, Raj Foundation, Urvashi Foundation and Ambrunova Trust. It however did not reveal the exact identity of the account holders yet.

Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is set to receive Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of the country.

The formal announcement will be made by Tuesday evening after meeting between Finance Minister Pranab Minister and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sachin Tendulkar will be the youngest recipient of Bharat Ratna. The demands for Bharat Ratna to India’s iconic batsman got louder after he became the first batsman to score a double hundred in ODIs last year.

Tendulkar is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He has almost every record in his book. He is the leading run scorer in Tests and ODIs. He is the only batsman, who scored fifty Test centuries. He has maximum number of ODI hundred (46).

Tendulkar passed 30,000 runs in international cricket on 20 November 2009, and has been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honor. Tendulkar became the first sportsperson and the first personality without an aviation background to be awarded the honorary rank of Group Captain by the Indian Air Force. According to the sources, actress Waheeda Rehman Shashi Kapoor and renowned musician Khayyam will get the Padma Bhushan awards 2011. Ex-planning panel chief LC Jain will get the Padma Vibhushan

Indian cricketer VVS Laxman, shooter Gagan Narang, wrestler Sushil Kumar, actress Kajol, Tabbu and actor Irfan Khan will be conferred of Padma Shri awards.

However, the name of Bharat Ratna will be discussed in a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee at 4.00 pm on Tuesday.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu are in the race for the country’s highest civilian honour.

Sources said that the Prime Minister Office (PMO) has recommended the name of Indian batting maestro for the Bharat Ratna.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has also favoured Tendulkar’s name for the Bharat Ratna. However, there are some reservations over Sachin’s name as he is too young for the award.

Earlier, BCCI had forwarded Sachin Tendulkar’s name on Monday.

On the Other hand, government has also announced the gallantry awards. 21 armymen will get Shaurya Chakra and five will get Kirti Chakra this year. Major Lass Ram will confer Ashoka Chakra posthumously.

Sukna Land Scam 2011 | Let Gn P K Rath Court martialled

Lt Gen P K Rath, who was found guilty in a land scam by a court martial a day earlier, was Saturday handed down a sentence including stripping off of his rank and forfeiture of 15 years of service for pension purposes.

The court martial against Rath, the first serving lieutenant general (Lt Gen) to be found guilty, recommended taking "off the rank and the precedence of appointment" with substantive effect from May 24, 2010. In effect, his promotion in 2008 may now be considered effective from 2010.

The court martial also recommended forfeiture of 15 years of his service for the purpose of pension, besides a severe reprimand.

Rath, the former 33 Corps Commander , was found guilty on three counts in a scam in which a no-objection certificate (NOC) was issued to a private realtor to transfer a 70-acre plot of land adjacent to the Sukna military station in West Bengal's Siliguri district.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party late Friday called for Karnataka 'bandh' (shut-down) Saturday against Governor H.R. Bhardwaj permitting prosecution of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa over land scandals.

'We will organise Karnataka bandh tomorrow (Saturday),' party spokesperson S. Prakash told IANS, within hours of Bhardwaj announcing that he had sanctioned filing of criminal cases against Yeddyurappa.

The BJP had announced earlier that it would hold rallies across the state and would meet President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi Jan 24 demanding Bhardwaj's recall, accusing him of being 'biased' against Yeddyurappa and the BJP government in the state.

So far, 18 Tamil Nadu natives, 20 from Karnataka and five Malayalis have been identified and confirmed dead in the tragedy. Anparashu (42) From Thiruppur, Tamil Nadu and Suresh (19) from Mysore. Unnikrishnan and Kora Kutty from Kerala are among those dead. The rest are yet to be identified.

Chief Minister of Karnataka has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of dead and 25,000 to those injured.

ISRO's space programme suffered a major setback on Saturday as the launch of advanced communication satellite GSAT-5P failed due to major technical fault in the first phase.

The rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) exploded mid-air moments after it took off from the Sriharikota rocket launch centre.

The satellite GSAT-5P was expected to serve the needs of the telecommunication sector and the weather department and would have eventually replaced the INSAT-2E satellite that was sent up in 1999.

It weighed 2,130 kg and the cost of its production was around Rs 125 crore.

The GSAT-5P satellite had a life span of over 13 years and had 36 transponders - automatic receivers and transmitters for communication and broadcast of signals

Nalini Jaywant, well-known actress of yesteryears who mesmerised cinegoers with her tantalising portrayal in "Munimjee", co-starring Dev Anand, died at the age of 84 at her home earlier this week in Chembur in north-east Mumbai. According to film industry sources, the actress had turned into a complete recluse for the last few years after the death of her husband, actor Prabhu Dayal. She died on Tuesday of a heart attack, a distant relative of hers said.

Neighbours said her servant informed her distant relative, who was seen placing the body in an ambulance for the last rites. A stunned Dev Anand, who acted with her in a couple of films, including "Kala Pani", said he was shocked to hear about her death.

She made her debut in films with "Radhika", released in 1941, and went on to feature with big names like Dilip Kumar and Nargis in "Anokha Pyar", a love triangle. She starred opposite Ashok Kumar in "Samadhi", "Sangram", "Mr X" and "Kafila" and opposite Kishore Kumar in "Muqqadar".

Her other notable films were "Behan", "Jalpari", "Shikast", "Jaadu", "Mehbooba", "Raj Kanya", "Railway Platform", "Saloni" and "Bombay Race Course".

Jaywant won the Filmfare best supporting actress award for her portrayal in the 1958 film "Kala Pani". Her last released movie was 1983's "Nastik", in which she made a comeback to films.

A.R. Rahman. The double Oscar winning Indian composer has bagged a Golden Globe nomination for Danny Boyle's '127 Hours', having already won the trophy once for the director's mega sweep 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009.
This is the 44-year-old's second flick at Hollywood's second most prestigious annual movie prize after Boyle's Mumbai-based multiple-Oscar award wining underdog drama 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Rahman won two Oscars and a Golden Globe for his number 'Jai ho' in the movie.

The Chennai-based composer is competing in the same section as before - Original Score for a motion picture category - with the likes of Alexandre Desplat ('The King's Speech'), Danny Elfman ('Alice in Wonderland'), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross ('The Social Network'), and Hans Zimmer ('Inception').

Bollywood was on cloud nine with its leading musician's feat.

The shy musician also has two gramophones on his shelf that he won at the 52nd Grammy Awards for his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

More than 150 people were killed in heavy rains in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, Dec 5.The low pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal created heavy rains and flood like situation in Tamil Nadu. The weather department said that the rain will continue on Monday, Dec 6 as a fresh low pressure trough has formed in Bay of Bengal.

Government officials said that schools and educational institutions in Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Trichy and in some other affected areas will remain closed on Monday.Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as heavy rain expected in coming hours. The death toll is expected to increase. Most of the death were due to electrocution, wall collapses, lightning and drowning in flood waters

Toll touches 100 in TN rain ravage

The monsoon toll in Tamil Nadu touched 100 with two more people, a nine-year-old girl in Thanjavur and a college student in Madurai district, dying in rain-related incidents on Wednesday even as incessant showers continued to disrupt normal life across the state.

The police said Suruthika, of Kanthavanam near Melattur, was sleeping in her home early on Wednesday when a portion of the wall collapsed in heavy rain, crushing her to death. Her mother Sundari, 30, and brother Surya, 8, who were also injured in the mishap are undergoing treatment at Thanjavur Government Hospital.

In another rain-related death, floodwaters washed away 20-year-old Kalyanasundaram J., of Sakkimangalam in Madurai district, when he was bathing with his friends in the Vaigai river on Tuesday. Fire service personnel retrieved his body on Wednesday after an intense search.

In Kanyakumari several children escaped injury or death when a government primary school in Kanyakumari collapsed Wednesday morning. Earlier, torrential rain claimed the lives of two women in Palani Tuesday night.

The police said Mahamayee and her daughter-in-law Mallika were killed when the mud wall of their house collapsed. Their bodies were recovered from the debris. Mallika’s daughter Abinaya, 2, sustained grievous injuries and has been admitted to Madurai Rajaji Hospital. Her condition is said to be critical.

Weathermen in Chennai predicted that heavy rainfall could continue up to the end of the month. “While the southern districts have received the most rainfall over the past few days, our models indicate that precipitation may spread to northern parts of the state over the coming days,” said Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general, Regional Meteorological Centre. “As the low pressure trough over the state remains potent, we can expect good rainfall for the six or seven days.”Met department officials pointed out that the northeast monsoon has now become fully active over Tamil Nadu and rainfall this year could be bountiful as it has been over the past few years.

India's women squash team ended with a bronze after losing 0-2 to a formidable Malaysian side in the semifinals at the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Wednesday.

Top ranked Indian and World No. 37 Joshna Chinappa then went down to World No.1 Nicol David 4-11, 2-11 3-11 in 18 minutes.

Malaysia will play Hong Kong in the final. Hong Kong beat South Korea 2-0 in the other semifinal.

I was ready to face all difficulties, all obstacles and was able to reach this point. I wasn't able to cross the 'fastest finger first' level. I tried so many times and I knew I could do it," said Tasleem.

Three Indian films in IFFI international competition | 3 Indian Movies Tops IFFI

Three Indian films -- Vihir (Marathi), Moner Manush (Bengali) and Just Another Love Story (English) -- are among the 18 entries to feature in the international competition section at this year's IFFI beginning in Panaji on Monday.

Directed by Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, Vihir (Well) is a multiple award-winning film in the international festival circuit and deals with friendship between two teenage boys and how they are forced to face questions related to death and life.

Veteran filmmaker Goutam Ghose's Moner Manush is based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel on mystic poet Lalon Fakir with superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee in the title role.

Kaushik Ganguly's Just Another Love Story tells the story of a gay filmmaker (director Rituporno Ghosh) and a bisexual cinematographer (played by Indraneil Sengupta) who decide to re-evaluate their love life.

The competition section this year has been made open to all feature films from across the world. Earlier, this section was restricted to feature films from Asia, Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America.

This section includes West is West by Andy De Emmony, Chinese film Apart Together directed by Wang Quan An and Hollywood entry Shit Year directed by Cam Archer.

It also boasts of films from Iran, Israel, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Mexico and New Zealand.

The festival has introduced two awards in the competition section -- Best Actor and Best Actress.

The Best Film will be awarded the Golden Peacock besides a prize money of Rs40 lakh; the Best Director the Silver Peacock and a prize money of Rs15 lakh while the Best Actor and Actress would take home a Silver Peacock and a prize money of Rs10 lakh each.

The Special Jury Award winner would be bestowed with a Silver Peacock and a cash prize of Rs15 lakh.

The awards will be announced and presented at the closing ceremony on December 2.

The IFFI also announced a five-member international jury which will be headed by Polish writer-director-producer Jerzy Antczak, who arrived in Panaji today.

The four other members of the Jury are Mick Molloy, Olivier Pere, Indian filmmaker Revathy and Sturla Gunnarsson and are expected tomorrow in Goa for the Festival.

Bharti Airtel on Thursday unveiled its new brand identity and announced that its 3G services will be launched by the end of next month. India's leading mobile operator also said it has crossed the 20-crore subscriber mark from its operations in 19 countries in Africa and Asia.

“Fifteen years ago, Bharti Airtel started its journey in India with a promise of delivering world-class and affordable services. Today, as we expand on the global stage, this new brand identity gives us the opportunity to present a single, powerful and unified face to our customers, stakeholders and partners around the world,” said Bharti Airtel Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Mittal while unveiling the new logo.

Referring to the launch of 3G services, Mr. Mittal said: “We are on track…3G services will be launched by the year-end.” Making the first video call on the beta version of 3G, he said the industry hoped to see some improvement in margins as the new services would increase usage of data. Bharti Airtel has won 3G spectrum for 13 circles out of 22. Bharti Airtel is world's fifth largest mobile operator. Of the 20-crore subscribers, India alone account for 15-crore. The company has around four-crore users in Africa, while the rest are in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
