The accident has not occurred in Sabarimala for the first time. The last such incident occurred in 1999 that led to the death of 53 pilgrims and injured many others. Accusations are rife that the police personnel did not make adequate arrangements to handle the huge influx of pilgrims from all over the country.
All bodies have been recovered and postmortems are being carried out in various hospitals across Kerala. The identities of only 74 people have been ascertained so far. The names of the injured are -
Mysore Natives : Basaraj- (23), Mahesh (28), NJ Sami (28), Vasu (30), Suresh (27), Yamanappa (26), Sathish (22), MJ Sami (30)
Karnataka natives: Mahesh Bhasu, Munnusami, Rohit (27), Jagadeesh, Jagan, Ranganathan. Natives from Danapur: Lohit Danapur-Suresh (28), Basavaraja. From Podukotta- Bogesh (28). From Koppal - Vasu (30),
Tamil Nadu natives - Jaganathan (51), Chinna Sami (30), Dharmapur of Dharmapuri.
Andhra Natives: Padakapurti Sathya Reddy, Kadupetty -Jagadeesh, Jangatty-Yamunappa (26).
So far, 18 Tamil Nadu natives, 20 from Karnataka and five Malayalis have been identified and confirmed dead in the tragedy. Anparashu (42) From Thiruppur, Tamil Nadu and Suresh (19) from Mysore. Unnikrishnan and Kora Kutty from Kerala are among those dead. The rest are yet to be identified.
Chief Minister of Karnataka has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of dead and 25,000 to those injured.
